ISNA “flagship bi-monthly magazine” praises Hassan al-Banna
Authors: Osman Abdel-Magid Ahmed and Fathi Osman
Source: Islamic Horizons, March/April 1999, pp. 34-39
Original title: Hasan Al-Banna a Martyr of Our Time
Original subtitle: Remembering a True Guide
Excerpts:
OSMAN ABDEL-MAGID AHMED
The message that al-Banna pursued is the most appropriate for Muslims in this age… It is especially relevant in this era when Muslims are spreading and living across the world, particularly in the United States, where the numbers are growing.
But al-Banna’s message, a repetition of the Message delivered by Prophet Muhammad, was already known all across the world, in Africa, the Middle East and in Asia, and soon was broadcast in Central Asia, in Europe and in the United States.
The persecution has often created leadership problems. Muslims in the United States, the freest country in the world, have a special responsibility to fill such a void. It is hard to imagine that we will easily find someone to fill al-Banna’s place, but at least a collective leadership should emerge to take on that task.
FATHI OSMAN
Al-Banna took great pride in the fact that the Ikhwan al-Muslimeen (Muslim Brotherhood) keenly avoided patronage of the rich and powerful.
He (al-Banna) called for mediation between (political) parties and even for their dissolution so they could emerge as a single entity serving according to the guidance of Islam.
When the (Egyptian) 1945 law forbade social organizations from taking part in political activities and placed them under the control of the ministry of social affairs, al-Banna split the Ikhwan into a political wing and a socio-cultural wing.
