French Academic Incorrectly Characterizes Muslim Brotherhood Position On Armed Violence

François Burgat, a French academic specializing in the Islamic world, has incorrectly characterized the Muslim Brotherhood position on armed violence. According to an article he wrote for the leftwing publication Le Monde diplomatique:
“Muslim Brotherhood: The most influential Islamist movement, from which most other groups stem, even the most radical. Founded in Egypt in 1928 by Hassan al-Bannah, it has spread throughout the world and has branches – which are in fact independent – (1) in many Arab countries. It is usually conservative and rejects armed violence, other than in the Palestinian territories.”
As discussed in previous posts, the Global Muslim Brotherhood espouses the doctrine of “defensive Jihad” based on the idea the violence is permissible mot only in the Palestinian territories but whereever Muslims or Muslim honor or land are deemed to be under attack. One previous post reported that theterrorist group known as Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) thanked global Muslim Brotherhood leader Youssef Qaradawi for declaring that Kashmiris were fighting a “Jihad” against the Indian Army.
It should also be noted that Hamas clerics have called for the “annihilation” of Israel and that the fatwas of Global Muslim Brotherhood leader Youssef Qaradawi authorized suicide bombings against Israeli citizens in Israel itself.
