Original title: Edmonton Muslims Celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr

Muslims all around the world will be celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr on Tuesday August 30, 2011, the first day of Shawwal, the month following the fasting month of Ramadan.

Eid-ul-Fitr is a unique and joyous occasion with important religious significance. It is a day of forgiveness, peace of the congregation, fellowship, and unity. Muslims celebrate not only the end of fasting, but also thank God for the opportunity of having experienced Ramadan and receiving the Barakat (Blessings) of the Holy Month.

A sense of generosity and gratitude colors the festivities surrounding Eid. Compassion, kindness, generosity, charity and good deeds – which form the ethos of Islam – have a special significance at the end of Ramadan. In keeping with the ethic of generosity, Edmonton’s Muslim Communities will be making contributions to the Edmonton Food Bank of collected food items as well as a cash donation.

This year marks a milestone for the Muslim Communities of Edmonton, since it is the 10th anniversary of the annual Boyle Street Community Dinner. The Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities and the Islamic Family and Social Services Association will host this annual dinner at the Boyle Street Community Services Centre on Sunday, September 11, 2011. The dinner generally serves over 1,000 disadvantaged inner city men, women and children.

Our thoughts and prayers are especially with the millions of people who are facing starvation in the Horn of Africa. We pray for the end of famine in that region. Our prayers are also with all in the Middle East who are struggling, have lost their lives, or have been wounded in an effort to bring democracy and justice to their homelands. We feel a renewed sense of gratitude to have been blessed with the opportunity to make Canada our home, a country where fundamental rights of all peoples are respected.

The Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities is an umbrella organization representing ten different Muslim entities within Edmonton. Created in 2002, its mission is to speak and act on behalf of Edmonton Muslims with fellow Canadians in a manner that protects, promotes, and enhances the understanding of Islam and Muslims in matters of public policy, education, peace and safety.
