Lauren Booth (Tony Blair’s sister-in-law), Abdal Hakim Jackson and Dalia Mogahed were on the list of RIS 2014 speakers announced in October 2014, but their names were removed from the December 26 program of the event.

Tariq Ramadan and Jamal Badawi were among the high-profile absentees at the RIS 2014 convention. In August 2014, Ramadan criticized the leadership of ISNA and the Muslim scholars invited at the RIS convention. He also indicated that he would not take part in the ISNA convention in August 2014, nor the RIS convention in December 2014.

Many Muslim leaders, including Mohamed Magid (then ISNA president), Sherman Abdal Hakim Jackson, and Nazim Baksh (a leader of the Ihya Foundation that launched the RIS convention in 2003) replied to Ramadan.

Nazim Baksh: Dr. Ramadan is demanding ISNA’s leadership condemn ‘policies’ that does not exist. And even if they were to sharpen their swords of condemnation for every real or perceived transgression they’re likely to discover the cut is much deeper in Muslim majority states including Qatar which has given Dr. Ramadan millions of dollars to elaborate on the topic of Islamic ethics.

Jackson, who asked Tariq Ramadan to reconsider his decision, was also scheduled to speak at the RIS 2014 convention in October 2014, but his name disappeared from the December 2014 program of the event.

As far as we can tell, only one sponsor was associated to the event. Therefore, the ranking of sponsors (Diamond, Gold, etc.) was not used in 2014.
