In a press release published today by the Qatary News Agency, Qatar Charity (QC) announced that they will allocate $20 million QAR (over $5M USD) to the “reconstruction of the demolished houses of the civilians in the Gaza Strip ‘due to the recent Israeli aggression’, and to cover other needs including food relief, medicine and others.”

Several organizations describing themselves as ‘humanitarian’ in Canada and abroad have recently lost their charitable status for funding or participating in terrorist activities. A significant number of these organizations have ties to the Qatari based Muslim Brotherhood spiritual leader Youssef Qaradawi, the Hamas and the international network of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood.

In sections 80-84 of the case R. v. Ahmad 2009 CanLII 84774 (ON SC), Mr. Justice Dawson explained that:

When a Canadian organization funds humanitarian activities in Gaza, it allows Hamas to free up money that would have been spent for civilian purposes and to direct it toward other purposes. It is therefore impossible to dissociate contributions made for Hamas’ humanitarian activities in Gaza from those that are made to support its terrorist and military activities.

The Union of Good is a coalition of Islamic charities that provides financial support to both the Hamas “social” infrastructure, as well as its terrorist activities. It is headed by global Muslim Brotherhood leader Youssef Qaradawi, and most of the trustees and member organizations are associated with the global Muslim Brotherhood. The Union of Good was banned by Israel in 2002 and was recently designated a terrorist entity by the United States, although neither Youssef Qaradawi nor any of the Trustees were similarly designated. Despite the fact that action has been taken against some of its member organizations in Europe, many of its other European member organizations continue to operate. Further, the Union of Good itself does not appear to be under investigation in Europe.
