[EXCERPT] After taking a lashing on social media, Canadian restaurant chain Earls announced Wednesday it will bring Canadian beef back to its eateries.Last week, Earls faced a sharp consumer backlash after it announced it would begin sourcing its beef from the U.S., through the Certified Humane marketing program. The move was intended to satisfy its need for a consistent supply of beef free of antibiotics and steroids, and slaughtered according to criteria set by animal welfare advocate Temple Grandin.
After the announcement, many Canadians skewered the chain on social media, calling for a boycott of its restaurants. Critics also suggested Earls’ move implied that Canadian beef was not humane.
“We made a mistake when we moved away from Canadian beef,” Earls president Mo Jessa said in a news release. “We want to make this right. We want Canadian beef back on our menus so we are going to work with local ranchers to build our supply of Alberta beef that meets our criteria.”
